Game on is a short film that forces children to be aware of their surroundings online. It would be a fantastic film for parents to show their children, particularly children who enjoy using their time online,  to keep their children aware of the dangers of social media, video gaming and never sharing personal information.

#GameOn has a story of cause and effect, such as an individual sharing her password with her best friend and then her best friend changed her pictures and homepage. In the short film, there are four stories of a total of six children attending the same school.

These stories include 2 female students sharing their passwords and one of them changed her homepage, 2 male students who begin to struggle in school and fall asleep through being tired and staying up playing video games together, a male student who believes his ringtones on his phone are free and a male student who shares his selfies with ‘kids all around the country’ until he is lectured by police that you never know who you are truly talking to.

We will begin with the video game story. Two friends are hooked to their video game and stay up all night, until the school calls one student’s parent and has a discussion with his parents. Afterwards, this student must tell his friend about the consequences of their decisions and must stop playing to rebuild friendships, their academic success and general social interactions.

We then move on to the two females who share their passwords. These students are best friends, of course, until one of the friends change the other’s homepage and play with the photos. The victim is not satisfied and spends a lot of time and energy trying to find out who did this. It was only until the perpetrator says ‘it was only a joke’ during a conversation, and had to admit the crime.

How about the  male student who believes his ringtones are free? This student did not read the terms and conditions and only relied on the power of the website saying it was free, until his parent’s phone bill came in and discovered that he needed to pay $10 a week for his ringtones, and needed to pay his parents $40. This student was aware before this when the police lectured them about ‘free stuff is never free’.

Finally, there is the student who shared his selfies. This student shared his photos and selfies with ‘kids’ he did not know.  His sister looked through his phone one night and told his mother, who had a talk about the dangers and effects of social media. He also was inspired to avoid his phone by the police lecturing the students about dangers of social media.

I think the #GameOn video would be very suitable to watch for parents who are committed to their child’s safety on computers and social media.

Definition: An appropriate way of using the internet, social networks and more.

Rules of netiquette:

1. Don’t be abusive, rude, or anything that involves acting as an obnoxious human being.
2. Respect other individual’s privacy, no inappropriate behaviour or abuse.
3. Don’t put rubbish on the internet, e.g. useless websites
4. Don’t begin to be addicted, and respect other’s timekeeping, too

If an individual denies these moral laws of the internet, government and police are a potential in a negative manner. Be responsible online. These rules are essential as social media can either negatively effect or positively effect your reputation.

The advantages and disadvantages of the internet

Some advantages

We all use the internet in first world countries, or otherwise you would not be here right now, and we wouldn’t use it if it didn’t have advantages, would we? So, what might be some good things about the internet you may ask? Well, some include advertising opportunities for organisations and companies, connecting individuals through social media e.g. Facebook, Twitter, excreta, entertaining us via Netflix, gaming, excreta, and many more opportunities around the internet that is beneficial. The benefits are endless.

Some disadvantages

With all the benefits of the internet, it is easy to forget that the internet is also a dangerous place. Things like Facebook and social media can get young individuals into inappropriate situations. It can also create isolation and make elderly people feel like they are not fitting in. The internet is also highly addictive and as people can put whatever they wish on the internet, it makes it easier to get distracted by other things than what is important.

A man called John Zimmerman is 26-years old and a former tour manager of a gateway plan in Australia, but Zimmerman is now facing 87 charges mainly 23 charges of sexual penetration child and 55 victims have come across this man. This man talks with teenagers via Facebook. This is just one example of how the internet can be a dangerous place

To conclude, I believe that the internet can be a positive source of information if the individual uses it correctly and with caution.
